John Munroe began studying Buddhism at age 11 and has been practicing meditation since 1976. His primary focus was Burmese insight meditation - studying and doing a number of retreats in Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Japan and North America - until 1989, when he met Ven. Namgyal Rinpoche and Doug Duncan. Encouraged to take a more expansive view of Dharma by these remarkable teachers, John studied and practiced with Rinpoche at the Dharma Centre of Canada until taking up residence in Japan in 1992. He has practiced with a broad range of teachers including Ven. U Pandita, Anagarika Munindra, S.N. Goenka, Joseph Goldstein, HH Gyalwang Drukchen Rinpoche, Ayang Rinpoche, and several Zen teachers in Japan and Toronto.

In 1997, together with Paul Jaffe, John invited Namgyal Rinpoche and Doug Duncan to teach in Japan, where Doug Duncan founded Dharma Japan and the Yumedono temple in Kyoto. In 2001 Doug Sensei instructed John to begin presenting meditation classes in Tokyo. Fluent in Japanese, John encourages both Japanese and English speakers to learn by doing in these informal, participatory sessions.

Formerly a copywriter and translator, John currently runs an importing business and makes regular TV appearances. He is an avid scuba diver and his interests also include skydiving, music, languages, history and the outdoors.

John continues to practice in Tokyo under the guidance of Doug Sensei, exploring Dharma in action while participating in retreats and the new Clear Sky project in western Canada.
